Forgiving yourself and accepting God's grace for yourself can be hard. Anytime we do something wrong we have to be able to forgive ourselves. This can be very difficult sometimes.
Believe it or not pride can keep us from forgiving ourselves. Pride keeps us locked up in shame because we have to humble ourselves to realize our need for God's mercy and humble ourselves to accept it. If you take it upon yourself to "punish" yourself by not forgiving yourself, you are basically telling God that your sins are more powerful than the blood His Son shed as payment for those sins. That is a very dangerous form of pride that can creep up on a person.
Satan has this sneaky plan because in our minds we don't see how pride and shame are linked together. Satan wants to keep you too proud to be able to accept God's grace. He does this so you will be in bondage to shame.
If you are in bondage to shame you won't feel worthy of God's love or the love of anyone else for that matter. You won't be able to love yourself and will continue to make the same mistakes that got you into the Hall of Shame in the first place.
If Satan can do this successfully he will keep you from walking victoriously with God through your life and keep you from being affective to the lost and hurting people around you. We get freedom by accepting God's promise that "if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:9.
Confess your sin to Jesus. He has already forgiven you. When He died on the cross He paid the price for all sins: past, present, and future. After you confess it, thank Him for His forgiveness. Then tell yourself you forgive yourself out loud so you can hear it and Satan can hear it. That's the end of it. If it pops into your head you rebuke Satan in Jesus' name and thank Jesus for forgiving you.
"And He has said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness." Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. (2 Corinthians 12:9)
God showed me this one day through how quickly I forgive and forget when one of my children make a mistake because they're learning. He helped me realize that as His child He doesn't expect me to do everything right. It's my learning curve. I needed to give myself grace to make mistakes and learn from them. He paid the price so I could do this without shame. I chose and continue to choose to humble myself to make mistakes and move on. Think of each day as a chance to begin again. If yesterday was rotten, start fresh today.
"The LORD's loving kindness indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness." (Lamentations 3:22-23)
