Our family recently went to the mountains and, as always, I was blown away by the beauty of God’s creation. He is a master painter and brilliant architect!
When visiting the mountains as a child, my parents would often pull the car over and say things like “Girls look! Isn’t it beautiful? God is awesome! Look at what He has made!” Sometimes we’d be standing in the surf at the beach and, with their arms open wide, they would say, “Praise you Jesus for this beauty! Thank you for this creation!” Or even better was when my dad was trying to show a lizard to my sister and I. He grabbed it by the tail—which fell off and started wiggling and bleeding. Although our reaction didn’t show it (“Daddy gross! Put it back! Yucky!”) we saw God’s perfect design of the lizard’s disgusting self-defense instinct. I want to teach my kids the same things and show them how to see His glory in everything around us:
- The tiniest details of leaves changing colors
– Flowers that are about to bloom
– The awesome beauty of roaring ocean waves
– The mighty mountains and their breathtaking landscapes
– The majestic heavens, which is the landscape of the flat plains of Texas where I live, and their ever-changing colors of pink, orange, and blue.
Taking notice of these things teaches us to be grateful for the small things and to focus on what is beautiful in this world. I’m so grateful that I was taught to take time out and notice the creation around us. I urge you to take time to do the same, whether you are by yourself or with your spouse and kids. Breathe it in and soak it up!
Psalm 69:34
Let heaven and earth praise Him, the seas and everything that moves in them.
Psalm 19:1
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.
Psalm 65:6-8
Who formed the mountains by Your power, having armed Yourself with strength, who stilled the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, and the turmoil of the nations. The whole earth is filled with awe at Your wonders; where morning dawns, where evening fades, You call forth songs of joy.
