Joshua sends 2 men to Jericho to spy out the land. They went and lodged at A harlot's house named Rahab. The king of Jericho was informed that there were spies from the children of Israel sent to spy out the land and that they were staying with Rahab. The king asked her to bring them out, but she had hidden them. She told the king that they had already gone out of the city and that his men might be able to catch them if they hurried. After the king's men left she went up to her roof where she had hidden the spies.
Verse 9: "and said to the men: 'I know that the Lord has given you the land, that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are fainthearted because of you.' "
She goes on about all that they had heard about what the Lord had done for the children of Israel including escaping Egypt by walking through the Red Sea where God had parted the waters and how they had defeated other kings.
Verse 11: "And as soon as we heard these things our hearts melted; neither did there remain any more courage in anyone because of you, for the LORD your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath."
I love verse 11 because right there Rahab has professed that their God is the "God in heaven and on earth beneath." She also realizes her need to be saved!
So she and the spies make a deal that anyone inside her home will be saved from destruction on the day the Israelites come to take the city of Jericho, and she would not tell anyone of their business. The spies also instructed her to hang a scarlet cord in her window so they would know which home was hers.
The scarlet cord to me is another representation of being saved by the blood of Christ. This is so awesome! A harlot named Rahab recognizes who God is and that she needs to be saved. Sister Rahab hangs that scarlet cord in her window marking her as saved. Beautiful!!! God is so good and faithful to save us when we cry out and He keeps His promises.
I think for fun I just might need to wear red today to honor Rahab. Thank you God for extending the same saving grace to me. Thank you, JESUS!!!
